About summer

Hello and welcome.

Hello and welcome friends, my name is Summer. I am a writer, a scientist, and a storyteller. I am currently working as a Communications and Outreach Specialist at the University of Washington in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. I have a Masters in Geology from the University of British Columbia.

As a trained scientist and educator, I respect and admire the intense passion of faculty, researchers, and students and their dedication to their fields of expertise. I also appreciate that the Department of Earth and Space Sciences is housed within a public University, and therefore much of my work as a communicator is in service to the public.

Anne Roe, an American psychologist and writer, said in 1952, “Nothing in science has any value to society if it is not communicated.” I have this quote pinned to the wall above my workstation. All the content I create as a communicator on behalf of the Department must have value to our stakeholders. Those stakeholders include faculty, students, staff, alumni, donors and supporters, the UW community, our local Washington community, and the broader public.

For the geologists out there, my research focused on studying Archean continental crust, i.e. what was the composition of its magmatic source and how did that evolve over time.

Outside of work, I try to live slowly and in alignment with the seasons. I’ve started embracing how my energy and interests change throughout the year. I enjoy gardening in the spring and summer, and turn towards cozy hobbies like knitting and sewing, canning, and freezing in the fall and winter. I read year round and live by my kindle reading streak.
